Classified as Important Bird Area by BirdLife International (IBA IT040)
Inside the Reserve, on the right side of the mouth of the Isonzo River, there is a tongue of earth covered with a dense cane: "Il Caneo"
This area has escaped the full reclamation of the early 20th century and has remained in its natural state. It is bathed by the fresh water of the river to the north and the salty water of the sea to the south, a characteristic that affects the vegetation, consisting predominantly of thick canes and alofile associations, ie plants tolerating salinity.
Birds represent one of the most remarkable naturalistic aspects in the number and varieties of species observed (currently 317 out of the 500 birdworms for the Italian avifauna).
